LOCAL SURFERS-Who's rippin' your spot? email

TOM SETH
After a quarter-century of surfing, it’s not
unreasonable to expect a surfer to show signs of
slowing down. After a quarter century of surfing
the South Bay’s polluted waters, over-populated
line-ups, and thick, walled-up closeouts, it’s
not unreasonable to expect a surfer to show signs
of bacterial meningitis, high blood pressure and
mild brain damage....

JOHN BALK
The first surfing experience that I had was with
my older brother on a longboard. I probably weighed
less than the board and the leash was attached to
my foot. When I fell off the board it pulled me
about 50 yards. I was scared in the beginning, but
after that happened I was getting more comfortable........

TRISTAN "RED DOG" WELCH
LA is arguably the ultimate in the urban surfing
experience, and at the top is Dogtown. Most surfers
know about Dogtown (Venice-Santa Monica) - if they
don’t, then they should. The area has produced
some of the heaviest chargers in surfing and skateboarding,
including Tristan “Red Dog” Welch. ........

JEFF
O'DONNEL
If you surf enough, you have probably seen him ripping
the early morning surf somewhere between Malibu
and the South Bay. He gets up every morning at 4
AM to surf before work and family, and is as committed
as any surfer can be. Next time you are out, look
for the guy whose white van is one of the first
to park, you may learn something. ........

JAIME PEREZ
Jaime surfs every chance he can get, regardless
of the conditions. He is fearless in triple overhead
surf, but can still enjoy 1-2ft slop. In fact I
don’t think he even cares what the report
says, he’ll surf anything. "One wave
is better than no waves", Jaime reminds me
just before he takes off on a late drop. ........

JOSH SCRIBNER
This edition of "who's hot" features a
guy most of you have seen ripping on a regular basis.
He's a little different in that he really isn't
part of the pack and he seems to slip in and out
of the line up with little fanfare or notice. He
prefers it that way, but if approached, he is an
affable and knowledgeable guy. ........

MARK HACKER
When we decide to do a story or highlight a person
of note at Porto, the pieces usually fall in line
pretty easy, as Porto has no lack of characters
to highlight. For this month's "who's hot"we
chose someone that may seem an odd pick on the surface.........

RANDY WRIGHT
Randy Wright grew up in the mean streets of Los
Angeles, spending the majority of his adolescence
in the rough and tumble sections of Venice Beach.
At the age of 14 he purchased his first board; a
6 ft. 3 in. Wind and Sea single - fin. Surfing Venice
in the "Dogtown Era" was akin to going
to war. A hardened group of locals dominated the
line-up. Vicious brawls both in and out of the water
were commonplace. ........

MATT CHERNEGA
Matt Chernega is almost to young to be a who's hot
but still too old to be considered a grommet. Matt's
skill in the water is a beautiful cross between
a more traditional search for the perfect tube to
the more modernistic air, grab, reverse, olley oop
slide, wing dingers and the tricks of the future.........

TY CUKR
Ty is one of the best surfers to come out of the
South Bay . His act in the water is as good as it
gets. From vertical surfing in big waves at the
Redondo Break wall, to going beyond vertical in
smaller waves that most would still consider big.
When he paddles out people take notice and it's
not hard to see why........
