I have been living in Costa Rica and working as
a surf photographer for almost two years now, focusing
primarily on the traveling/vacation surfer. Two
years ago I was working as a CPA for a large financial
services firm, not really enjoying or having passion
for my work. I was always passionate about photography,
and got back into surfing a few years earlier. During
a surf trip to Mexico our surf guide took photos
of us each day and we were all stoked. About a year
after that trip I decided to take a break from the
corporate world, drove to Costa Rica and began shooting
surfers. Not long after that I opened a small studio
where my clients can come by and see their photos.
Now I truly love what I do. I wake up every day,
excited about going to work, and sharing my photos
with people. I have this little studio where people
can come by in the afternoon and see their photos,
both on my computer and on the TV playing a slideshow
of the day’s best shots. When most people
come into the studio and see their photos playing
on the TV they get really excited. For me that is
the most rewarding part of my job. We all want photos
of ourselves surfing but nobody ever wants to stay
on the beach to take photos, and even if they do,
they lack the equipment to get professional quality
shots. Almost every day I meet someone that tells
me that although they have been surfing for 20 years,
or more, they have no good photos of themselves
surfing and how fortunate they felt that I was there
to capture them doing what they love. As long as
people are excited about their photos I will be
there on the beach, or in the water, shooting away.
