MATT
MOHAGEN
Where are you from Matt?
Culver City.
Do you like where you live?
It's okay, but it's to far from the beach.
Do you have any siblings?
A sister and a brother.
Is your sister cute?
I don't know.
Does your brother surf?
Yes.
Is he good?
In big waves he is.
How about your Dad does he surf?
Yes.
How old are you?
Thirteen.
What kind of board do you ride?
Mc Crystal Surfboards, from Ventura.
Do you like their boards?
I LOVE THEM!
What age did you start surfing?
Six or seven, actually seven.
What kind of board did you ride when you
first started surfing?
Uhh, I think it was a Spyder.
Did you get into surfing right away or did
you go like once every month?
Right away.
Do you have any sponsors?
Yes, Mcrystal Surfboards, Body Glove, Revolution
surf shop, and Auctiv.
Are you happy with all your sponsors?
Not all of them. I want to try and get a bigger
company than Auctiv, but I like their clothes.
What was your worst wipe out?
At Upper Trestles, when I was eleven, I only went
out for fifteen minutes, because my brother amped
me up to go out. So I took off on a nine or ten
foot wave, went over the falls and cart
wheeled down the whole face.
Did it hurt?
Uhh, I was under for a long time.
Do you like to compete in contests?
I like to compete, but I also don't because I'm
away from home a lot and I don't get to surf El
Porto.
Have you ever had to go out in a contest
when you didn't want to?
Yes, one time at C-Street, at a Volcom contest,
it was about ten to twelve foot and gnarly, but
I only went out because there was a contest and
didn't even make my heat. Then at Huntington Beach
there was an NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association)
contest, it was about twelve foot or bigger almost
touching the top of the pier, with a gnarly current
going into the pier, and it was just Gnarly. Although
I did take fifth place in one final and third in
another for different conferences.
Were you scared both times?
I was more scared at Huntington.
What is the biggest surf you've been in?
About twelve to thirteen foot El Porto.
Were you scared that day?
I was only eleven and I sh#t my pants.
Did you make NSSA's final event, Nationals,
last year?
Yes, I made it to the heat before the final and
got gypped, taking fifth in that heat.
So you're around eighth in the USA for your
age division.
Yes.
Have you won any big contests?
I won an NSSA at trails last year, beating Tanner
Gudaskas.
How did it feel to win it?
I was STOKED!
Where are your favorite spots to surf?
Rincon, Haggertys, K-55 Mexico, and Lower Trestles.
Why do you like to surf these places?
Because these are some of the best waves on the
west coast.
Where do you want to live when you are older?
Right on the point at Rincon.
Who is your favorite surfer and why?
Tim Curran, because he is good at airs and he has
a good style.
If you could combine three surfers who would
they be and why?
I would chose Flea for his airs, Taylor Knox for
his power, and Kelly Slater for his style.
Who is your role model?
My dad, because he's my dad.
Who are your favorite people to surf with?
Eddie Lester, Alex Abad, and Gus Salazar.
What do you think about locals and localism?
I like localism because it keeps places less crowded,
but I don't like locals who suck and think they
own the place.
What else do you like to do besides surf?
I like to fish and skateboard.
Does fishing interrupt your surfing?
One time a while ago, I went fishing for a month
straight and I didn't go surfing.
Did you first skateboard or surf?
I first surfed.
Have you ever been injured skateboarding?
Yes, one time I fell off the back of a five-foot
half pipe.
Did it hurt?
I got knocked out.
What's your favorite food?
POPCORN CHICKEN!
So you must be friends with the kernel.
Yes we eat lunch all the time.
What's your favorite kind of car?
I like the Toyota Tundra with a camper shell.
Why?
I don't know, because I like it.
What do you think about the attacks on September
11, 2001?
I think we should kill those bastards
Would you like to thank or say hi to anyone?
I'd like to thank you for having this report.
Well your welcome Matt and thank you.
