EDDIE
LESTER
Eddie Lester, this month's elporto.com grommet is
a familiar sight at Porto. He can be seen almost
any weekend and sometimes gets a session in during
the week. With his blond buzz cut and his mischievous
little grin he's out there tearing the top off of
waves and putting all of his 95 pounds of bulk into
his turns.
He's a NSSA team member and he seems to eat, drink
and dream surf. I had a chance to sit down with
Eddie in his hometown, El Segundo. I have to say,
he's as polite and well mannered as any kid I have
met and he was kind enough to endure my stupid questions
for this interview.
Where do you go to school?
El Segundo Middle School.
How old are you?
13
Are you a good student?
Yeah, straight A's (Replied with a straight face
too)
You like any girls at your school Eddie?
Yeah, a couple.
Are they pretty? What are their names?
Yeah they are. Do I have to tell you their names?
(No you don't and that's good judgment for a kid
your age)
How old were you when you started surfing?
Nine.
Who got you into it?
My Dad and my brother.
Do they still surf?
Yeah, and my brother is good too.
What's your favorite break?
I like Haggertys. I also like K55 in Baja, its fun
when it gets overhead, it's kinda mushy so you can
really carve without any fear.
Hey, I didn't hear you mention El Porto
Eddie!
Oh yeah, of course, it's my home break!
Are your friends or brothers pissed cause
you're the Elporto.com grommet?
No, in fact my brother is happy for me (you have
a cool brother Eddie) Thanks!
What kind of board do you ride?
Calvani it's a basic 5'3.
Any sponsors?
I just talked to Eric at Ocean Gear and he may sponsor
me.
You ever long board?
Yeah, sometimes when it's real small I go out and
goof around with my friends. (You have a lot of
company out there)
What is the biggest surf you have been in?
K55's, it was around 10 foot but I wasn't scared,
like other places at 10 foot.
Who's your favorite surfer? Why?
I like Kalani Robb, he's a smooth surfer, he seems
cool and nice and he does some crazy stuff on his
videos. Moto -cross and all that.
What's your favorite food?
Artichoke, with my mom's special sauce. (I told
you this kid is smart)
What are your immediate goals as far as
surfing and competition?
I would like to get a six or better in the standings
cause I can go to the finals. Then I have a shot
at that big trophy!
What are your long-term goals?
To be a professional surfer and if I can't do that
then maybe own a surfshop or something in the surf
industry.
You want to work with Elporto.com?
Sure!
Anything else you want to say to your fans?
Can I say hey to some of my friends?
No, but go ahead.
My brother, Alex Abab, Anthony Palazado, Matt and
Chris Mohagen, my parents (Eddie had a list but
we were running out of ink)
Anything else?
Yeah, thanks!
Your welcome Eddie, but you owe me some
waves.
Eddie smiled, nodded and skated off into the sunset,
drunk with stoke, well deserved pride and a belly
full of El Tarasco root beer.
